The Unnamed Collages

For my final project I created 12 different digital collages with various images depicting different feelings using color and content to try and extract emotion. Have viewers name the artwork themselves to allow a better understanding of the viewers interpretation and feelings. To accomplish this, I created a QR code for people to scan and write in their titles.

I have always found it fascinating how one work of art can have so many different meanings based on the viewers past experiences and mental states. if a viewer is feeling stressed then the name of the work may be very different to a viewer who is feeling happy.

The Process of Planning

1. For each collage choose at least 5 images and find a way to mash them together to make an image, a new work of art with found images.

2. Once the collages have been put together, print and frame them to solidify the new work of art that was made with old found images.

3. Display artwork next to a QR code for the viewers to give feed back and title the works.

4.Capture and find pattern of the given titles based on the contents of the collage to gage what the viewer was experiencing while examining the specific collage.

(The original plan was to use slips with prompts for the feedback but this has been changed to a QR code.)

Making Art

I created a gallery of images with content that I would like to cut out and put back together to make something new. During this process I was not sure yet how exactly they would all fit together but at least I had a starting point. Masking all of the images by hand took the longest. I could not find a program that would remove the backgrounds of the elements the way that I wanted.

 Finding the Best Layout

When the collages were all finished, printed and framed, I tried to lay them out in a sequence where the entire project looked balanced and didn't draw too much attention to one area of the work. After doing this at home, I took my finished work to class for my peers to help me. In class we had critique and went through different layouts, feedback and trying the QR code.

Submit your Layout

This is important for the overall look of the project rather than looking at each collage individually. Depending on the ordering of the images, the overall look could look off balance or one image could draw attention away from the rest. Your feedback is appreciated!
